The Task

G/FORE approached Labeltex Mills with the challenge of creating a unique ball marker that aesthetically looks unlike any other marker in golf today. My team and I were tasked with designing ball markers that stayed true to the brand, but also disrupt the typical history of ball markers. The markers had to work as a "coin" with no free standing elements, had to connect on multiple edges with enough surface area not to put the integrity of the markers overall strength in jeopardy, and had to be marketable to the established following that G/FORE had created.

Angle One

The first angle was to create a set of markers based on the elemental aspects found on every golf course. The challenge for this idea was translating these selective views into a vector that communicates the concept and can be produced in one piece.

The first focus within this first angle is a hyper-concentrated view of blades of grass on the rough. Because these blades are thicker and longer than that of the fairway, the image seems tiger-like when up-close. This creates vertical stripes with an aesthetically pleasing final result.

The second was to interpret the pattern found on the exterior of every golf ball. This circular pattern found in the thermoplastic resin is consistent and interpreted two dimensionally to communicate with the ball marker. After some initial testing, we determined that the space in between the circles was too thin to work with the physical construction of the piece. By changing the core shape from a circle to a hexagon, we allowed more strength and structure throughout the aerospace alloy.

The last idea was to design a marker using the unique shapes created by greenery that surrounds the various course hazards. As Art Director, I suggested visualizing these aspects of every golf course through the perspective of a drone. This pattern can be most notably be seen at famous courses such as Pebble Beach, Torrey Pines, and St. Andrews.

It was a challenge to interpret the individual elements and design them with an artistic touch while ensuring that the final product was producible. Not only do these serve the purpose of individually carrying visual meaning, these markers act as a set, artistically representing the various textures and landscapes experienced on every golf course.

Angle Two

The second angle of approach was to treat each design as a logo with its own unique identity. Each design, of course, still needed to function within a 1.25 inch circle. Concepts were more brand focused than other items which were created to visually integrate elements of fairways.

Final Product

The final design chosen for production is the “skull and cross-tees” marker. They are manufactured with aerospace alloy and finished in colored enamels through the Labeltex Mills Los Angeles office. The golf ball marker that was produced with the skull-and-cross tees design can be purchased through the official G/FORE website at gfore.com
